What to actually pack in your hospital bag
A short, tested list for you, your baby and the person coming with you — nothing extra, nothing missing.

Most hospital bag lists are written to sell you things. This one is written backwards — from what mothers reach for in the room, and what comes home unopened.
Pack three bags, not one
Splitting the bag is the single change that makes the hospital easier. One small bag for labour that stays within arm’s reach. One larger bag for the night and the morning after. One tiny bag for baby that a nurse can open without asking you anything.
- Labour bag: a hair tie, lip balm, one long charging cable, slip-on slippers, water bottle with a straw.
- Overnight bag: two front-open nightdresses, a soft nursing bra, high-waist underwear, socks.
- Baby bag: two bodysuits, one sleepsuit, cap and mittens, a muslin swaddle, a going-home outfit.
Your bag — labour and the night after
For the baby: less than you think
Hospitals are warm, and a newborn will spend most of the stay swaddled against you. Two bodysuits and one sleepsuit is genuinely enough for a two-night stay. Add a cap and mittens, and one swaddle you like the feel of.
If you are packing more than one outfit per day for the baby, you are packing for photographs, not for the stay. That is allowed — just keep it in the second bag.
What you can leave at home
- Newborn-size shoes.
- A full-size toiletry set — the hospital has the basics.
- More than one going-home outfit.
- Anything you would be upset to lose.
A note on sizes
Buy your own clothing one size up from your pre-pregnancy size, and buy newborn (0–3M) for the baby rather than a smaller size. Both choices cost you nothing if you are wrong, and save a trip if you are right.
